Snana Yatra at ISKCON NAIROBI

The Auspicious Bathing Festival

Snana Yatra is the grand bathing festival of Lord Jagannath, Lord Baladeva, and Srimati Subhadra Devi. This festival takes place on the full moon day (Purnima) of the month of Jyeshtha and marks the appearance day of Lord Jagannath.

At ISKCON Nairobi, the Deities are brought out to a special bathing platform (Snana Vedi). They are bathed with hundreds of liters of water, milk, honey, yogurt, and fruit juices while devotees chant Vedic mantras. Following the bath, the Lord is dressed in the famous Hathi Vesa (Elephant Mask) to fulfill the desire of a great devotee.

This festival is significant because it precedes the Ratha Yatra. After the elaborate bath, the Lord "falls ill" and retires to a private chamber for 15 days (Anavasara), during which the Deities are repainted and offered special medicinal herbs before their public journey on the chariot.
